SUNDAY POST
The church is in the news a lot lately, I see news articles about the church almost everywhere. I snagged these questions from an article that ran in the OC Register in California. They asked these questions to a local Stake President. I was wondering how easy we'd be able to answer these and if we'd do as well as he did.

They asked these questions to a local Stake President. I was wondering how easy we'd be able to answer these and if we'd do as well as he did.
Q: Earlier this month Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, said in a New York Times Magazine article: "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?" What's your response?
Q:Are Mormons Christians? Why don't we see crosses inside your meeting houses and atop your steeples like many other churches?
Q: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is one of the fastest-growing religions. What is the main cause of this growth?
Q:What are some of the key similarities between Mormons and mainstream Protestants?
Q:What are some of the key differences between Mormons and mainstream Protestants?
Q:What is the Book of Mormon and how does it compare to the Bible as far as guidance for members of your church?
Q: Do Mormons believe in modern prophets and continuing revelations? Name a modern prophet and something that has been revealed.
Q:Why is the family so important to members of the LDS church?
Q:What is the biggest misconception people have about Mormons?
Q:What's the most important thing a Mormon can do with his/her life?
Q:Polygamy has been banned since 1890 in the LDS church, but some religious groups still claim plural marriages should be allowed. Do these groups have any connection with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?
Q: Is there any other key point that we should know to help us better understand your religion?

i think i could answer some of those questions, but not sure if they'd be all that accurate. i don't know anything about protestants, for example. lets see his answers! (going to the link...)
I love the fact that he used scriptures to answer the questions, including several of our articles of faith. I don't think I'd want to be the one to answer those questions! But he did a great job.
I could do most I think, but probably not as well...like Dianna, I don't know a lot about Protestants either...guess I should study up a little.
Yesterday in church our high priest rep gave this analogy in regards to anti-literature...say you worked for a large corporation like IBM or MAC. Would you want prospective buyers to read about your product/company from your competetor? No, it would be biased...I'd never thought of this before, very cool.
Barb, my favorite comparison is:
"If you lived in the time of Jesus would you have gone to the Pharisees to learn what Jesus taught or would you have asked Jesus himself or the Apostles?"
i didn't like his answer to the first question. probably just me though.
Not enough info? Too much info? What would you have said? :)
Here's a statement from the church
Linky
It just seemed like a really roundabout way of answering the question, not that what he said was bad, just i think some people might not understand how that makes them related... or something :) now i'll have to go look at the other link!
The thing you have to remember about the statement "Jesus and Satan are brothers" is why they word it the way they do. It's a statement meant to shock people and get an emotional reaction. "If mormons believe that I wonder what other weird things they must think."
It's like if I said to someone who is about to eat dinner at your house: "Dianna lets her cats lick her dishes clean and then she serves people food with them." If you say yes and try to explain, that you let the cats lick the plates but there's more to it than just that (the whole washing of the plates and such) the damage is done and the guests are already afraid to eat anything you give them.
Now think back, have you ever heard from a conference, church publication, or bishop the teaching that Christ and Satan are brothers? I can't. The only place I've ever heard that is from the anti's.
hmm good point. and i do let my cats eat off my plates! :) but no one ever comes over... so fear not, you are all safe.
And you wonder why we don't come...=)
