SUNDAY THOUGHT
I talk to a lot of people with some strange ideas about the church. One of my favorite points that they almost always try to make is that "Mormons are nuts because they think they are Gods."
I love to just give them some quotes by early church fathers:
Note that these men are not early fathers of the LDS church, but early fathers of the mainstream christian tradition. These early leaders were much closer to the original beliefs held by christians than are the mainstream versions today.
Also note that when they refer to mortals becoming gods it's always with a lower case "g" not an upper case "G". Lowercase represents a lesser or copy of the original who is always dependent and not independent of the original.
I'll finish off with another quote:
I talk to a lot of people with some strange ideas about the church. One of my favorite points that they almost always try to make is that "Mormons are nuts because they think they are Gods."
I love to just give them some quotes by early church fathers:
"But he himself that justifies also deifies, for by justifying he makes sons of God. 'For he has given them power to become the sons of God' (John 1:12). If then we have been made sons of God, we have also been made gods." - Saint Augustine
"Yea, I say, the Word of God became a man so that you might learn from a man how to become a god" - Saint Clement
"if the Word has been made man, it is so that men may be made gods" - Saint Irenaeus
'He who is God by nature converses with those whom he has made gods by grace, as a friend converses with his friends, face to face.' - Saint Symeon
"For we cast blame upon Him, because we have not been made gods from the beginning, but at first merely men, then at length gods" - Irenaeus
"let the interpretation of the Psalm be held just as you wish, yet thereby it is demonstrated that all men are deemed worthy of becoming 'gods,' and of having power to become sons of the Highest" - Justin Martyr
"The command Be ye perfect [Matt. 5:48] is not idealistic gas. Nor is it a command to do the impossible. He is going to make us into creatures that can obey that command. He said (in the Bible) that we were "gods" and he is going to make good His words. If we let Him - for we can prevent Him, if we choose - He will make the feeblest and filthiest of us into a god or goddess, a dazzling, radiant, immortal creature, pulsating all through with such energy and joy and wisdom and love as we cannot now imagine, a bright stainless mirror which reflects back to God perfectly (though of course, on a smaller scale) His own boundless power and delight and goodness. The process will be long and in parts very painful; but that is what we are in for. Nothing less. He meant what he said."
-- C.S. Lewis

Is C.S. Lewis one of the Three Nephites? He's my hero.
The process will be painful - I like how realistic he is. We can't receive the best reward without having earned it.
Do you think living outside of UT has forced you to become more of a gospel scholar? What a great opportunity.
i really like that topic, i hear that one a lot, and i like the quotes coming from people out of the church.
eww, cs lewis. one of my seminary teachers ruined him for me. always quoting it! every other sentence! :)
Thanks for the comments :)
I actually started paying close attention to apologetics way back when I lived in AZ. About the same time we were preparing to go to the temple I also had some close contact with the local rabid anti-mormons. Very long story there.
For the last 5 years I've had a lot of practice with them on the Glenn Beck message boards. You get two kinds of people there, those who hear Glenn say things that touch their hearts and go to the message boards out of curiosity - and those who feel they have to warn everyone that Glenn belongs to a cult!
